I thirst

Made it down 705ft (twenty feet above sea level) and still no water. Tomorrow we're headed elsewhere for a few days...

Sorry to hear about your well problems. I hope everything is resolved soon!

Seriously...WHERE is your water???? One day it was there and the next day it wasn't...I don't get it.

WOW! I would have been headed out before now! You are a trooper! I couldn't make it much over a couple of hours! I am obs./comp. when it comes to hand washing!

Amanda said...

Yikes about the water! Where are you headed??? Down to the Island???

I need to research wells; I don't know that much about them. It just seems odd that now there is NO water. We have rain moving in, so will that help out any?

How aggravating!

Hey...Becky is the one who gives us the facts. Can ya hook us up and explain exactly how it all works, why it would dry up, the details. Hahahahaha.

That's a challenge I just might take...unless Andrea beats me to the answer. I'll check back later!

Okay ladies, here is how we've been surviving. Store bought jugs of water for hand washing and teeth brushing. For flushing the toilet we have gallon jugs we fill up at our neighbors garden hose (which we have to drive to...we live on a 5 acre lot and their house is a few lots down from us). It takes 2.5 gallons of water to refill the toilet incase you were curious. I will have to get Jason on here later tonight to explain the well workings...that is unless Becky gets here first!

Becky said...

No no...I will let the expert take care of the explaining...much easier to learn from him than have to research it myself!!!

Okay ladies, here it is. When you drill a well you dig through about 30 - 60 feet of soil until you get to the bedrock. This rock stores water otherwise known as ground water. This water is pure (that is safe to drink)as the soil and rock itself acts as a filter. Well's are measured by their production in terms of gallons/ minute. You need atleast 5 gal/ minute to sustain a normal household, although there are many wells in our neighborhood that produce over a 100 gal/ minute ... but that's a whole 'nother story. We never got more than 3 gallons/ minute. Aparently 1 of 2 things has happened with our well. 1) Tweddle dee left tweddle dum to install our well - this my theory. 2) the water table has dropped due to a shortage of rain.

Well there is the cliff notes version. If you want to read a little more go to http://www.wellowner.org/agroundwater/understandinggw.shtml

Y'all have a good night - I'm going to feed bird dawgs

I should also explain that when they drilled 700+ feet it was not where our current well sits, but near it.

Ahhhhhhhh....thanks for that info Professor! I didn't know how it was filtered. That has always confused me. I was also about to ask how y'all were making doing the daily things. I guess showers are a drive to someone's house.

2 1/2 gallons just to flush the toilet....more knowledge every day thanks to my blogging buddies. Ha!

Mystery solved. Thanks, prof! Hey Andrea, do you give David flouride supplements?

Andrea said...

No, but maybe I should. Everytime I go to the pediatrican's office they ask me "Is David on well water or city water?" but they never say anything when I respond with "well water."...I haven't been too happy with them lately : (

Yeah, that's why I wondered, my doctor always asks the same thing. Maybe they will recommend it in the near future? Maybe it's not important until a certain age? I don't know...we are on county water, but once I inquired about the question and they told me it was about flouride, but they didn't tell me any specifics.

Anyway, I didn't mean to get you worried. I wouldn't give him anything until you ask the doctor, b/c you never know. I'm sure it's fine. Hey, he's going to lose all these teeth anyway!

Andrea, I'm sorry you guys are still going through this, and Jason, I'm surprised that your cliff notes were actually really interesting...never thought I'd enjoy reading about the happenings of a well.

I needed to chime in on the floride thing. At Olivia's 6 month appt., her ped. put her on Floride & Iron Suppliment b/c she was still breastfed. He said that when she started getting 6-10 ounces of city water (be it through a sippy cup or made with formula) then we should stop the suppliment. Just thought I'd let you know.

That makes sense as to why I never heard about it. I always quit nursing my kids at 6 mos. So when I went in for that checkup and told the doc that I was in the process of weaning, he knew flouride was about to become available and didn't mention anything.

Andrea said...

See but I nursed David for one year and the dr. never said anything about flouride!

Becky said...

Maybe just come right out and ask the doc...then you know you'll get a straight answer.

Hope I haven't gotten you all worried...it's proabably not that important anyway.
