The picture is currently Laura's profile pic-it is a monument to the boll weevil in Enterprise, Alabama (you can click on the link to read more) Laura likes boll weevils, but I will leave it to her to tell you why!

Thanks everybody! Thanks Andrea! I sipped tequila like it was my birthday with dinner, but only one, since I'm a lightweight of the highest caliber these days. :o) The story of the Boll Weevil monument is that I am a Boll Weevil according the Southern astrology list (no, I don't take astrology seriously :o) -- it was just a really good description of me) and I was joking about it at work. Someone I work with is FROM the town with the boll weevil monument so my nickname at work became and is still "boll weevil." And when the same guy who gave me the nickname came back to Athens after his Thanksgiving trip home, he and his fiancee brought me all kinds of Boll Weevil stuff. So I have a spoon, and a sticker for my car, and a small flag at my desk...so yes, "boll weevil" is my nickname. :o) And the picture on my profile is the boll weevil monument in Alabama! There's not much you can do to turn my name into a nickname, so all the nicknames I've ever had have had absolutely nothing to with my real name (Laura). In college, my nickname was Betty, short for Betty Crocker. :o)

Why does Alabama even have a monument to Boll Weevils? Oh never mind, I'll go look it up...

I think the reason why this town has a monument to boll weevils is that the boll weevil cotton famine forced them to change the way they farmed. They think this was a good thing, since they were overfarming the land and not rotating crops in order to re-establish balance in the soil. So that's why they have a monument - they would have had to change their farming ways at some point, and the boll weevil forced them to look at that. Yes, I know too much about boll weevils and the monument.
